What type of rotary seal is most commonly used in rotary shaft?

There are various types of rotary shaft seals in the world. Some commonly known seals that are used in rotating shaft includes lip seals, spring energized seals (Spring seals) hydraulic seals and mechanical face seals. Before we dive into the most commonly used seals, it is essential to understand the different types of rotary seals used for rotating shafts.

At Parjet, we offer mainly 4 types of rotary seals:

HiPerSeals – Spring Energized Seals

Spring Energized seals are a U-shape machined performance polymer that uses spring energizers to provide force for the sealing lips. The outer seal jacket is commonly made from PTFE compounds using other high-performance fillers to utilize the overall performance. The springs help the sealing lips to constantly have in contact with the shaft and create a leak tight seal, allowing the seal to have slight misalignment. Parjet offers a wide variety of springs, such as canted coil springs, helical springs and cantilever spring which are chosen for different operating conditions.

HiPerLip – PTFE Lip Seals with metal casing

PTFE lip seals are also known as PTFE Shaft Seal, is a rotary shaft seal with a special sealing lip design. This type of seal is ideal for sealing high-speed rotary applications with low to medium pressure. The outer metal casing is pushed into the groove which makes sure that the seal does not rotate with the shaft and there is minimum friction between the sealing lips and shaft. This design of the HiPerLip withstands high speed applications.

PTFE Lip Seals with O Ring

PTFE lip seals can also come in other forms, with O rings on the OD. The O ring on the OD can prevent the seal from rotating with the shaft. HiPerFlon can withstand medium to high speed with low pressure operating environment. With the PTFE body design, HiPerFlon is easy to machine which can adapt to different dimensions without the need for new tooling.

PTFE Glide Ring Set – PTFE seal with O Ring, commonly known as step seals

PTFE glide ring set can be used in high pressure and very low speed applications. Unlike other seals mentioned above, PTFE glide ring set is easy to install which can be used in closed and small grooves. It can also be used in bi-directional pressure applications. The temperature limitation will depend on the material of the O ring. It is commonly used for piston or rod hydraulic applications.

The most commonly used rotary seal for rotary shaft are the lip seals, also known as oil seal or radial shaft seal. The lip seals are widely adapted to the rotary environment due to their effectiveness in preventing leakages of media from the rotating shaft to the external environment. They consist of flexible lip made from varies elastomers or plastic materials that can seal against the rotating shaft, typically in conjunction with metal cases or housings. The designs often allow for easy installation and provide reliable sealing performance in various industrial applications.

Nevertheless, the design of the seal and material will depend on the actual operating environment. Parjet offers a selection of rotary seals, below are the summary of the different types of PTFE rotary seals and their suitable application:

HiPerSeal – Low speed High Pressure

HiPerLip – High speed Low Pressure

HiPerFlon – Medium to High-Speed Low Pressure

PTFE glide ring set – very Low Speed High Pressure

We also provide other rotary sealing solutions, if you have specific operating condition that requires a sealing solution, our engineering team will be happy to assit you.
